Hi there! In my opinion yes. But I have to admit the Victorian look is not my taste at all. I would go with a much sleeker look, something like wood or faux wood blinds would look awesome. If you want some kind of drapery (also or instead of blinds), I would go with plain panels, maybe with grommets or tab tops, with a black wrought iron curtain rod. Hope this helped! p.s. I’m jealous, I’ve been wanting a leather couch for a while now, especially a brown one!

In January a lot of department stores have nice sales on linens and drapery, but a simple solution would be to use sheets they can be found fairly cheap you need to get top sheets. I use sheets for drapes in two bedrooms, and they look nice. Might take four sheets per window with your wide windows if you cannot sew you can glue them together.

I have a very small bedroom. Other than mirrors what are some ways to make it appear larger? What colors help?
Question by Casey’s mom: I have a very small bedroom. Other than mirrors what are some ways to make it appear larger? What colors help?
Help! Right now it is carpeted (ugly) but I don’t know what’s under it. That would definitely have to be replaced. There’s boring wallpaper which also has to go. I don’t know the square footage, but the room is oblong shaped with 2 average sized windows, one on the south wall the other on the east. The north wall is narrow, the west has a tiny closet, blank wall space then the doorway. I don’t want bland white or off-white walls. I’m not afraid of color, I just don’t know which colors, textures, paint finishes, window treatments, floor coverings etc. are optimal and which should be avoided. I can’t afford to hire a designer so your input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Consider these ideas:
Paint the walls a light color (check out behr.com for Lion, Clair de Lune). Then buy a quart of the same color in gloss, and paint vertical stripes (you can use masking tape to keep them straight, or free hand them for a more casual look).
Also, white crown mold around the top may draw attention upward, making the room feel taller. And, actually painting the ceiling a color can make it seem like more of an extension of the walls–adding perceived volume.
Go with lightweight, sheer window coverings that let lots of light in. If possible, mount them inside the extension jambs instead of on the window casing or on the wall.
Part of the challenge will be to keep the furniture from overwhelming the room. Keep the furniture to scale so there is space around the furniture.
And, consider whether the trim in the room should be painted a contrasting color (like white) or if it should be close to the wall color. White trim can create a visual border around the room, whereas trim that’s closer to the wall color might create more visual continuity.
Good luck.

Any tricks for cleaning mini blinds?
Question by remember me?: Any tricks for cleaning mini blinds?
I know I should just get rid of them, they are out of style, but I have so many windows and have only been here for a year, I am taking my time with decorating and window treatments. So does anyone have any tricks for cleaning these things? They are so old they are metal mini blinds.

I throw an old quilt down on my back deck and get out the hose and make up a bucket of warm soapy water and a soft scrub brush. I then take the blind down off the window, lay it on the old quilt, wet the blind down and then soap it up and scrub it with the brush, both sides. I then hose it off. I pick the blind up and tilt it sideways until the water drains off and then take it back to the window and hang it up. If you want, you can wipe the excess water off, but usually tipping it sideways and giving it a little shake gets most of the water off. I can clean all my mini blinds in about an hour. I have 7 in my house.

Is it possible to cover a shade with wallpaper?
Question by Miss: Is it possible to cover a shade with wallpaper?
Is it possible to cover a shade with wallpaper? Will the shade be too slick for adhesive to adhere to? I found some wall paper that would look great with my window treatments. Any ideas of how to use it. My only thought was to cover a shade with it.

It will be hard to get it to stick unless you use the spray on adhesive…..then you have the problem of getting the paper to lay on it straight. You have to spray both the shade and the paper.

What color curtains will go best with my red sofas?
Question by LizzieLiz ♥: What color curtains will go best with my red sofas?
I just moved into a studio apartment. I bought red sofas and my walls are painted a light yellow color. I have two big windows and I need window treatments because people driving by can see inside. What color curtains will go with my sofas? Or should I get blinds instead? Also should I get a rug? What color?

Answer by nellie
Curtains are “warmer” than blinds, so if you live in a cold climate you might want curtains. Since your walls are a light yellow, you might try matching the curtains to the walls; that should give your room a feeling of space as well. Yes, definitely, get a rug (unless you have beautiful hardwood floors!); a rug will help muffle sounds and provide a feeling of warmth and home. Your rug can pick up the colors in your curtains or your sofa, whichever you prefer. Good luck with your new apartment!

Any ideas about what I could use to make a RUSTIC, unique shower curtain for my bathroom?
Question by KristenCO: Any ideas about what I could use to make a RUSTIC, unique shower curtain for my bathroom?
I’ve just redecorated my bathroom to be very RUSTIC. (We live out in the sticks, so it’s appropriate.) I’ve painted it earthtones, and all of the new fixtures are in old barnwood or twig. The soap dispenser is an old Mason jar, etc. For me, the better. I’m trying to think of a great, rustic idea for a shower curtain. I used burlap in another room, so I don’t want to use that again – any other ideas? Ideally something I could use for window treatments would be nice, too. I’ve thrown around the idea of doing a patchwork quilt-looking shower curtain, but I’m not sure if that’s rustic enough.

You have some really creative ideas. I think that you could do a patchwork quilt shower curtain, you just have to choose the right fabrics and design in order to get the rustic look. For this, the “right” fabrics would include homespuns (woven plaids, checks or stripes) and muslin, both relatively inexpensive fabrics. You have two options with the homespuns – either cut everything very carefully to keep the lines straight, or deliberately cut them very noticeably off grain. If you do this, you expose bias edges which are stretchier than the straight of grain. Try foundation piecing it (also called “paper piecing”) if you do this, as that will help stabilize the fabric. A log cabin block is idea for your project, because it can be foundation pieced, it is fairly easy to make, and it is a rustic design. If you use muslin for your foundations, you can just sew the blocks together without any batting or backing. You need to fold the muslin from one side over the joining seam between blocks, tucking the raw edge under, then appliqué it down.

Window treatment for these huge windows?
Question by S.O.: Window treatment for these huge windows?
I need ideas on window covering for these windows! Do they make automatic window blinds for them (probably expensive) or would custom drapes work better(who would you suggest on making them). The sun is so much lower this time of the year and the sun is blaring and I can take it anymore. What would you suggest?

Yes, this is probably going to be expensive, depending upon what you like. But you have many options to work with. You could just have your windows tinted – this would be the least expensive.
You could also have each window treated with a shade or blind. If you went this route, I would probably choose a cellular shade because it doesn’t take much stack, the controls are in front instead of on the sides so you don’t have large light gaps on the sides. In my opinion, the very best treatment for these windows is full drapery that stacks on the walls. I would make them to the ceiling on a beautiful decorative rod that traverse to the right (left windows) and to the left (right windows) and meet in the corner. You could choose either a neutral fabric or go bold and add a punch of color to the room. You will have to decide whether to lose the light or lose the window with the stack, however, unless you move the sconces farther outward on the wall. If the drapery stacks on the wall and clears the windows, you will lose the sconces when drapery is closed. OR as is, you will lose part of the window to stack to keep the sconces in play. I would definitely move the sconces out away from the window and stack on the wall. It would be very dramatic even when not in use.

Window Treatment Installation?
Question by : Window Treatment Installation?
I’m relatively new to the whole “setting up house” thing, and so I apologize in advance if this seems like a “duh!”-sort of question. I recently purchased a gorgeous bedding set that included all of the matching valances, panels, and tiebacks that I’ll need to make over my room, and I want to get the window treatments up as quickly as possible! However, my problem is that I have NO idea how to go about this.
Somebody please advise me on how to set up my window decor. I bought some nice curtain rods and hardware, the kind that are more decorative in nature and have an ornate design to the ends. That is the type I’ll need assistance with. And, I’m not sure if it matters, but I have valances AND panels, not just simple curtains. Since they obviously can’t all go on the same rod…what do I do about that also??
FYI – Tried looking all of this up on the internet, to no avail. Need some serious interior help here!
Thanks 🙂

You need a “set” of 2 rods. The rods are all you need for that application. The valance will cover it’s rod entirely, and the valance will cover the rod that the panels are on.
