How to hang window blinds on a wall made out of brick or other type of window treatment that would work?

Question by jrunaas: How to hang window blinds on a wall made out of brick or other type of window treatment that would work?
We live in San Diego and the room in question gets a lot of morning sun. The room was a patio that someone enclosed with the far wall being all brick (fireplace). Where normally you would have drywall to screw in the brackets for blinds, you have a metal plate at the top of the window which the brick sits on. The rest of the house has wood blinds, but I’m up for anything – I just don’t know how to secure it. Any suggestions? Thanks

If allowable in your home, might try Liquid Nail. Can buy easily at Home Depot or Lowe’s, Its very strong, but you may have to hold the piece for a few minutes to let it set.

Without drilling into your brick this is the only option I can think of.

You could also try putting in a “roman shade” I believe they call it? These are available almost everywhere including Wal-Mart. It may not look like something you’d like but it would provide shade for you.

Best of luck!

I am renovating my home. Please suggest me eco-friendly window treatments.

Question by Joan Mccoy: I am renovating my home. Please suggest me eco-friendly window treatments.

Best answer:

Answer by James Hite
Roll-up Blinds are back with new eco-friendly textures and colors. These stylish blinds have fibers such as paper, bamboo and jute. These blinds also have a percentage of polyester so they will hold their shape, color and have longer life.

And, they have a natural luster that will shimmer and bring real warmth to your home for years to come. Plus, creating blinds with these fibers help the environment, because the plants are annually renewable and biodegradable.

Roman Shades are many times a complete solution and can be custom or ready-made. Since they are made of soft materials, and allow for light to come in or be blocked – they afford practicality, function and design.

what comes first in window measurement – width or height?

Question by shally: what comes first in window measurement – width or height?
I want to buy window treatments online. Target shows the dimensions of window treatments as 60×80″. Is 60 the height & 80 the width or vice-versa?

Best answer:

Answer by Akasha
Width is first, then height, then depth if it goes that far…for window treatments you might not need the depth measurement, but it tells you the thickness, such as how far it sticks out from the wall.

Q&A: Can you suggest a window treatment for large windows in a formal dining room that have plantation shutters?

Question by KYKate: Can you suggest a window treatment for large windows in a formal dining room that have plantation shutters?
The shutters come out pretty far when they are open so the window treatment needs to accommodate them.

Best answer:

Answer by dblindguy
You may want to try a fabric wrapped cornice. Just make sure that when you mount it, you mount it high enough for the shutter panels to swing open under the cornice.
You can either hire someone to custom make this cornice for you, or you can make it yourself if you’re handy.
Without getting too technical, a cornice is a flat board with attached flat board sides that you staple cotton to, then staple a fabric to, and then mount it to the wall.

Q&A: How do you fix a window treatment on a wall that the window is off balance?

Question by **Cullen**: How do you fix a window treatment on a wall that the window is off balance?
What I mean is the window is not in the center of the wall. So how would you use a window treatment to make it look like it was balanced? Please use pic. if you can. Thanks!

Answer by seamstress
If I understand your question, here is a solution to make the window look as though it is centered on the wall:

Find the center of the wall. From there (the center of the wall), measure to the outer edge of the window on both sides of the window. Take the larger measurement and double that number. Hang a curtain rod the length of the doubled number, centered on the wall, above the window frame.

Hang two LINED drapery panels on the rod and allow one panel to cover the wall and part of the molding. This will give the illusion that the window is in the center of the room.

If you intend to close the drapery, be sure the width of each panel is wide enough to do so.

Is there a window treatment for open dormers that I can close automatically?

Question by Dena P: Is there a window treatment for open dormers that I can close automatically?
We just moved to our new home in Florida. In the living room we have two open dormers that provide a lot of light. I would love to find a window treatment (blinds?) that I can open or close automatically. I love the open brightness of the room, but it casts a major glare on our big screen TV. Not to mention being blinded by the bright sun during the middle of the day.

Do remote controlled blinds exist? I would love to be able to control the brightness of the room.

Best answer:

Answer by Jon R
Yes they exist and are pretty common. You will have to go to a custom window treatment store to get them or order them online, so they may be a bit pricey. They even have them with a remote control!

What type of window treatments would you recommend?

Question by twinmom: What type of window treatments would you recommend?
for the back windows of the first floor of my house? I have a long line of windows that extends from the dining room, which is a bay window, to the kitchen, and then to the family room. It’s an open floor plan so you can see the windows from one room to the next, and the windows treatments need to work together. The house faces west so the morning sun shines directly into these windows, so I need something that blocks or filters light, yet, my young children play on the deck outside the kitchen so I can’t obstruct the view. I am worried regular blinds will block the view from the kitchen too much. I need suggestions for blinds, shades or drapes. We have priced out plantation shutters and I’m not sure about them because of the cost and they may partially obstruct the view.

Best answer:

Answer by DecoDiva
Wood blinds or faux wood blinds. Then hang narrow drapes from the top of the window molding to the floor, only in the areas between the blinds, to give it a decorative touch without obstructing the view. Go with a color and design for the drapes that will give you good flow between the three rooms.
Tilt the blinds in each room as needed for light or sun control. If you don’t close the blinds completely, but only part way, you should still be able to see outside to see the kids.

Where can I find window treatments for a sliding patio door?

Question by William U: Where can I find window treatments for a sliding patio door?

Best answer:

Answer by patrebb
Any company that sells window coverings can help you on this one. Do an online search for companies in your area, or go to some of the major manufacturer sites (hunterdouglas.com, blindcrafter.com, graberblinds.com). Many people do vertical blinds or draperies for their patio doors, but you do not have to be so limited in your selection. There are a lot of other options so it is good to do the research and see what suits your lifestyle and decor.

Can someone help me with window treatment ideas for a bedroom window with vertical blinds?

Question by noelle1821: Can someone help me with window treatment ideas for a bedroom window with vertical blinds?
I will have to get measurements, but I have a window in my bedroom, which is a pretty large size, but has vertical blinds and I’m trying to figure out ideas for curtains/window treatments to ‘pretty’ up the space.

Best answer:

Answer by ClicketyClack
Only mini-blinds or vertical blinds will give you the options of the window glass being fully or partially exposed whenever you want and in an easy fashion. If you want to merely add curtains but retain the blinds for privacy, then you could get a set of double curtain rods. Put a fancy valance on the outer rod and coordinating sheer curtains or heavier slub silk or velvet curtains on the inner rod. When you draw them closed, they would cover the blinds but when they’re left at the sides, the blinds are exposed and you can open them to let in full or partial light. Good luck!! : P

Q&A: how to measure for window treatments?

Question by piattro: how to measure for window treatments?

Best answer:

Answer by AirBaby
You should measure both inside the casings and outside and make a note which is which. It really depends on what you are getting and ultimately personal preference. Always measure from where the treatments are going to hang. For cafe curtains, you will need to measure the top and the midpoint. In some houses these will be different. Not by much, but it will give you a better idea for rod sizes.

Curtains are usually hung from the outside and most rods are adjustable. Some people hang their blinds or shades from the inside of the window. I personally think it looks neater that way.

If you really want to go easy and especially if you are renting, I recommend getting pressure rods that require no nails or screws. You have to measure from the inside for these, but they are simple and easy to take down when you move.
