We have bought three window treatments and none of them have blocked out enough light! Suggestions?
Question by noseyparker4: We have bought three window treatments and none of them have blocked out enough light! Suggestions?
We have bought three window treatments now for the same window and we are still getting too much light coming through at dawn. It’s actually too bright even in the middle of the night because of the street lights, and I lived in the country for ten years so I’m accustomed to complete darkness for sleeping. We also need this room dark at mid-day because our toddler will not nap unless it’s dark.
What we have tried so far – Levelor roller shades. We put them inside the frame and of course massive amounts of light is streaming through the sides. Recently I heard that we should try an outside mount and get a roller shade that measures two inches wider than the window frame – would this block out all the light, really, or would some still come through?
We also have a curtain rod with long curtains hanging from it, in addition to the roller shade but light is coming through the sides of that too.
Has anyone else had this problem, and what product solved it, or what did you end up doing?

Add a second curtain rod that is 2-4 ft longer than the window. Use a heavy curtain in combination with the shade. As an example look at most modern hotel rooms. They are usually in a fairly well lit area and need to provide some relieve for their guests.
What do you think? Answer below!
What you should have used are “black out” drapes, hung on rods mounted 4″ from each side of the frame
I have used fiber-backed vinyl for black outs. Use tensions rods inside the window sash, have the vinyl as wide as the frame with rod pockets on the top and bottom. When the vinyl is in place, snip at the bottom of the top frame and top of the bottom frame ( both sides), extend the material out. This can be used but taken down easily for when you want light. Or just push the bottom rod up for light.
