I just bought a house where the previous owners left nothing on the windows. No drapes, curtains, blinds, etc. The front of the house has arched windows, the back standard rectangle. Should all the windows facing one direction be the same color from the outside? Should they be the same style (ie: Roman shades, vinyl blinds, etc.) And how do I hang blinds from those arched windows?

There are no rules, although I prefer all the windows on one side of the house to look uniform, like all woods blinds, romans, etc.
Or if you are using a combo of blinds and drapes, I like at least the base to be the same.
If all the wood trim is the same in the house I think its nice to keep the window treatments the same too.
As far as the arched, you can get custom fit treatments, but I’ve never seen any that look good. I’d start the treatment under the arch.

Question by secret: what kind of window treatments should I use on extremely small windows?
I live in the basement and I have a total of 3 windows which are extremely small. The ones in the study and the kitchen are 1 ft in height X 2 ft in length. The ones in the bedroom are 1 ft in height X 4 ft in length. These windows are located near the ceiling and not in the middle of the wall if that helps. Putting up regular sized curtains seem inappropriate and I’m scared it may overpower the look of the room.Not to mention it may look weird. What are some ways that i can cover up the windows for privacy reasons? Are curtains the only way to cover the windows and if so, what can I use? What are some alternative ways if there are any?

If you keep it simple by using a valance the small window will not be over dressed. Use a roman shade or blinds for privacy.

I am moving into a new office at work and it has a very challenging layout with windows taking up two walls. I can’t paint and there is only one small space to hang artwork so I thought I would add some window scarfs to give the office some color. At home I have a merlot window scarf which I really like, but this does not seem appropriate for an office. Any suggestions?

Maybe a soothing shade of green or blue or lilac. Reds and oranges tend to stimulate appetite (that’s why most fast food places use that color scheme).

You can use any style you like. The arched part isn’t covered, so any type will work.

Where can I by window treatments for a small window?

My husband and I are doing our kitchen right now. We are going to paint the walls a medium green color. I guess it would be in the pastel colors family. The only window in the room is above the sink so it is one of those really short ones. Does anyone know where we can get something that would work there? Thanks!

Best/least expensive way to go is through HomeDepot or the like. Go this route first. Remember too that kitchen window treatments often get the most grease/steam/moisture on them.
Length isn’t usually a problem, it’s width. But even with width you can sometimes cut them smaller.
I’m talking about Venetian blinds at this point, but that’s pretty much where you have to start anyway. The curtains can come later. I’d stick with white or off-white venetian blinds because you might change your mind about the color of your kitchen in a couple of years and the green ones will be useless if you do.
We have pale green/neutral paint in our new den but we bought white venetian blinds inserts for our Pella windows. They look just fine. We aren’t going to bother with curtains for this particular room, they’d simply look too busy and they’d catch the rain on those days when we opened the glass and just left the screen door open.
For ideas, GO TO REALTOR.COM and look at the ‘most expensive homes’–they usually show 12 pictures of each home. You’ll get ideas that way.

What’s “in” for bay window treatments?

I have two bay windows in my new home – there are temp. paper shades up right now to keep the peepers out. What’s the ‘in’ thing to do with treatments? Shades over each window and a valance on the inside, just a valance? Shades with no valance?
I’ve been snooping at other people’s windows looking for an idea and can’t seem to find any consistency. The only thing I definitely do not like is vertical blinds.
Any thoughts?
By the way – the windows are positioned in such a way that we need a little privacy, but not total coverage.

I have one in my kitchen – and here is what I have done:
I have ivory sheer 24″ L panels that I have shirred onto inside tension mount rods. I can open and close them by hand.
For a valance, I change with the seasons. For winter, I get a strand of natural looking red berries on a grapevine strand and string them mostly across the middle window and over lapping on each side window! I do the same with the other 3 seasons: Right now, I have a garland of spring flowers.
I wanted the window treatments to be minimal because my window is so pretty. ( I am sure yours are too!).
If it’s a living room or dining room and you have fairly common sizes, I think that an inside mount roman shade looks pretty. Of course, custom would be beautiful, or if you sew maybe you could really be creative. Get some window treatment books from your library (there are tons!). In the index there is usually a section for bay or bow windows.
Good luck. (also, I found the bay window treatment rod very frustrating to use plus I didn’t want to put holes in the wood- they do sell them at JCPenney).

What are the standard lengths of drapery window treatments?

I am trying to outfit my windows with drapery however I am not looking into custom for financial reasons. I would like to order some drapes or get them off the shelf however I am looking for something in the range of 50-54ish inches in length and only seem to find either old school kitchen window tier sets or drapery in lengths of 84″ and up. Does what I am looking for not exist in the standard world or is there an alternate key word I should be using for “short drapes”?

In interior design now we are seeing the drapery rods are raised quite a bit higher, some as far as where the wall and ceiling meet. It does create a dramatic effect. 84″ is what you will find off the rack, and sometimes custom ordering is not for everyone’s pocket book. Have you considered using the 84″ length and getting creative with the various hardware that is on the market that you could tie in a fashion that would relieve some of the unwanted length?? I have used this length and tied the painels 1/3 of the way from the bottom in large knots. I did this in a Tuscan kitchen theme I had done, it was not gender specific. Turned out great.
