Actually, there IS a stud in the wall, you just didn’t hit it. Locate a device, a “stud finder” which is actually a radio frequency device which senses density. As you move this over the drywall surface, it will indicate where there is wood behind the drywall, finding the stud. I have one, and they really DO work. The cost is only $ 10-$ 15. As another pointed out, you can also purchase drywall anchors. There are 2 types of anchor, sleeve and butterfly. The sleeve type is a tube of plastic which when you put in the screw expands and grips the sides of the hole. The butterfly type is metal with a very long screw. You put this into the hole and tighten the screw. As the screw pulls the end toward the inside side of the drywall, it flexes the metal and “legs” form which grip the drywall from behind. You remove the screw, put it through whatever you are fastening and screw it back in place.. This kind of anchor is permanent. It cannot be removed without doing some serious damage to the drywall. The plastic anchors hold less weight, but are not permanent, easily removed so the hole can be patched.
