Door Window Panel Coverings
Door panels are typically composed of two rod pockets to fit over rods at the top and bottom of the door. This is actually advisable, considering it would imply that you can open and close the door sans the curtain swinging or getting trapped in the door.
These panels are available in various colors and fabrics, they include those with patterns. They can blend with any décor. You can go for sheer fabrics that will allow more light to seep through, while heavier materials come with more privacy. Majority of styles can either cover the door fully from side to side or be pulled together in the middle with a matching tie-back.
Another kind is one that you can raise and lower much like window shades. At daylight, you could pull the shade up and let it stay there without getting in the way with tabs that were attached for such purpose. Come nighttime, you can release the tabs and allow the shade to come down and cover the window. There are shades like this that have self-adhesive closures that you can use to attach to the door at the bottom when they are closed.
If you have French doors or a door with sidelights at home, you can opt for matching door panels to separately give coverings for each of them. These ones are made to fit standard sized doors and sidelights, and by separately buying each panel, you can buy them to fit whatever configuration you have. These door panel window covering sets will make your doors look amazing while giving you more privacy.

Good question. Our new house has a sliding glass door and vertical blinds. My mom even gave me a new set of vertical blinds. But my SIL told me it looks like a motel room LOL. The only feasible alternatives I’ve come up with is a) reflective film (so no one can see in, eliminating the need for any window covering) or b) treating the sliding doors as a really big window. I like b better. You can just buy drapes, valances, etc whatever you would buy for a window. You might have to custom order or make it yourself due to the size though.

Take the curtain rod all the way up to about two inches away from the ceiling. This will elongate the window/doors and make it look more elaborate. Do the width wide so that the window treatment can be opened wide enough to allow use of the doors. If one side does not open …you could design the window treatments to push to one side as well. I would leave room on both sides to be able pull the window treatments far and away from the window to allow light to flood in when you so desire.
You could use a cornice board covered with padding and fabric to add the height to the window. You can play with lots design ideas.
Use a subtle yet uniform design to avoid a very plain look …or a very wild look. Something with some texture would be nice as well.
I would go to the local fabric store and pick out the fabric that matches your kitchen best. Have a seamstress come measure the window and help you make a cornice board.
Buy the curtain rod before you buy the fabric to avoid spending more money than necessary.
You may want to buy a small piece of fabric, bring it home. hang it up on the wall. Look at it for a while and live with it to see if you really like it before buying enough to do the whole window.

Problem with french doors window treatment?
Question by kar: Problem with french doors window treatment?
Hi, I have two french doors that are together. Only the right door opens. The left side does not. I have 30 inches of wall on the left side but none on the right side. I need to draw curtains only from the wall on the left. I would like to install grommet top drapes that I can draw for privacy at night. Can someone tell me what kind of rod I would need, and where to place it I have 12 inches from the ceiling to the top of the doors. Hope someone can advise me. Thanks

Have you considered using narrow-slat Venetian blinds that fasten at the bottom of the doors as well as the top? They can still be adjusted for privacy, but they don’t flap around. We have that arrangement on our French door and it works just fine. It has the advantage of allowing us to open the door slightly at night to let in fresh air, without a curtain billowing.
If you like the curtain look, but don’t want a loose curtain, you could hang a decorative curtain along the wall next to your French doors. It would not open out, but always be gathered up closed.
If this wouldn’t work for you, you could go ahead with your full curtain idea. I would suggest adding one of those clear plastic pull rods to the top of the open side of the curtain, so nobody has to grab the fabric and pull it out of shape or get it soiled.
