Simply Window Treatments: All You Need to Know to Make Curtains, Shades, and Swags

Simply Window Treatments: All You Need to Know to Make Curtains, Shades, and Swags

Simply Window Treatments: All You Need to Know to Make Curtains, Shades, and Swags

The dressing on a room’s windows can mean the difference between a decorating scheme that doesn’t quite work or one that is truly successful. But custom-made window treatments can be terribly expensive, and many do-it-yourselfers are afraid to tackle anything more complicated than a hemmed rectangle of fabric stuck on a pole. As this attractive and thorough guide points out, most curtains start out as exactly that; their uniqueness and appropriateness to a particular setting is a matter of proportion, color, trim, and other detailing. Embodying Sunset’s winning how-to series format (see also Simply Slipcovers and Simply Upholstery), the book explains how to choose the right treatment and supplements its extensive step-by-step instructions with good, clear photos and diagrams. In addition to actual construction information for various curtains, valances, swags, and shades, the projects explain planning, measuring, and cutting and include loads of great tips on achieving a professional appearance. Many projects also feature design variations and occasionally “designer details,” ideas for finishing touches like tiebacks, rosettes, or sheer mitered hems. Following the 20 projects, the “basics” section explains hardware and mounting considerations, yardage calculations (including photocopy-ready worksheet blanks), installation directions, general construction techniques, and an overview of essential equipment. Even the novice sewer can create dynamic, professional-looking window treatments with the excellent guidance here. –Amy Handy

Q&A: What has happened to fabrics lately? Know where I can find some pretty and sophisticated shower curtains?

Question by CassandraM: What has happened to fabrics lately? Know where I can find some pretty and sophisticated shower curtains?
I’ve been shopping for both window treatments and shower curtains lately….what has happened? Even old reliables, like JC Penneys, look like they either belong in a brothel or a bottom of the barrel discount house. I’m not normally that picky of a person, but it’s hard to believe I can’t find a pretty floral print – but I COULD buy fuzzy, hot pink drapes with beads down the middle. I don’t get it.

Linens ‘n Things or Bed Bath & Beyond have rather boring fabrics, but go to Stein Mart for really nice ones.

If you don’t have one in your area just go to a fabric store or Calico Corners for yardage in any floral you choose. You don’t even need a pattern to run up a few seams.

It takes only 4.5 yards to make a balloon curtain for your 36″ windows.

Are lace curtains to old fashioned in a room with a leather couch?

Question by Learning is fun!: Are lace curtains to old fashioned in a room with a leather couch?
If so, what window treatments would you recommend?

Answer by becky b
Hi there! In my opinion yes. But I have to admit the Victorian look is not my taste at all. I would go with a much sleeker look, something like wood or faux wood blinds would look awesome. If you want some kind of drapery (also or instead of blinds), I would go with plain panels, maybe with grommets or tab tops, with a black wrought iron curtain rod. Hope this helped! p.s. I’m jealous, I’ve been wanting a leather couch for a while now, especially a brown one!
