Q&A: What color window treatments?
Question by Vicki D: What color window treatments?
I am moving into a new office at work and it has a very challenging layout with windows taking up two walls. I can’t paint and there is only one small space to hang artwork so I thought I would add some window scarfs to give the office some color. At home I have a merlot window scarf which I really like, but this does not seem appropriate for an office. Any suggestions?

Maybe a soothing shade of green or blue or lilac. Reds and oranges tend to stimulate appetite (that’s why most fast food places use that color scheme).

As long as the window treatment is not too frou-frou, a plain scarf might be okay for an office. I’d keep it simple – no lace, ruffles, sheers, formal fabrics, rosettes, etc. I wouldn’t “swag” it too much – just try to keep the lines simple and tailored. The merlot color sounds fine for an office, but it would depend on the fabric as to whether it would work well in a business setting.
Do you have floor space to add plants or trees? They could be real or silks, and the greenery would add color, texture, and layers to the space.
Since there is only a small space for art work, I’d choose something eye-catching and tasteful. I’m thinking a colorful abstract that is attractive but not too “over the top”, but that’s my taste. You may like something else.
I’m sure you can make it very pleasant and attractive.
You would want to use light and airy calm colors like powder blue, light pink or lilac, even some pale yellows.
