Ideas, please, to help keep my kitchen from looking too dark?
Question by Sarah M: Ideas, please, to help keep my kitchen from looking too dark?
I’m in the middle of redecorating my kitchen. Appliances are a mixture of black and stainless steel, walls are terra cotta, accent wall is sandy-colored, light oak wood laminate floors, black cabinets, white countertops. Any suggestions for nice, bright accents (rugs, window treatments) to keep it from looking too dark? Please and thank you!

I would suggest a short white sheer valance for your window treatments. As for a color to “pop” in your kitchen, I think green would coordinate with all the other colors. I’m thinking of bright green bottles or vases on your window sill, if possible. Maybe a bowl of limes or granny smith apples. Or a lime green colored jar candle. Just enough to add a splash of color. As for the rugs, I’m thinking they’re going to have to be a shade of white. You seem to have a good sense of style and decorating, so I know you can make this work. Good luck!

We added a wallpaper border with an offwhite background with mauve shades & green shades in it. I used the the mauve to plum and various lighter greens in:
throw rugs
covers on counter appliances
color of canisters (for flour, coffee, sugar, etc..)
curtains
hand towels, etc…
I then put antique kitchen items (coffee pots, pottery bowls, canning jars, etc.. on top of the wall cabinets. Then, draped various greens of a fake vine around & on the antique items. The various greens & reds added color, interest & gave lighter accents.
we lived in an apartment last year, and the kitchen always seemed dark, because of the dark cabinets and flooring. we couldn’t do much to re-decorate, so i just bought some white rugs, and sheer curtians to let in some light. i also got some brightly colored pictures to hang. we were on a budget so it had to be simple. if money isn’t an issue, lowes is great. they have people there that give you ideas about window treatments, flooring, cabinets, everything. when i think about redecorating, i always check lowes.com for ideas!
I can see with the black appliances you might do your cabinets black but I’d paint them. You have the terra cotta, light oak and sandy color, I’d pick something in that family. Something a little darker than the sand or if the sand isn’t the same wall as the cabinets the sand. Here’s a link to some ideas for window and floor. Good luck!
